With so many beautiful places in Hanoi, it can be difficult to narrow down the most photogenic spots to visit – that’s why we’ve decided to lend a helping hand. From historical landmarks and vibrant flora to streets bustling with local life, these are our top six top picks for getting that perfect shot.
1. Tran Quoc Pagoda
Great for capturing: Hanoi’s history
The city is packed with some of the most beautiful Buddhist temples in the world – Tran Quoc Pagoda in West Lake is actually the oldest in Hanoi and better yet, it’s totally free to visit. Surrounded by beautiful greenery, it’s the ideal spot to chill out, take in the scenery and get that shot. While it’s a great place to visit at any time of day, those with a keen eye for snapping away should definitely visit at night. 10/10 Instagram worthy.
2. Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural
Great for capturing: Hanoi’s art scene
Around 4 miles long, this famous Vietnamese artwork can be found near the Old Quarter and will give you plenty of opportunities for the perfect shot. In fact, its length is so impressive that it even landed a spot in the Guinness World Records in 2010 for being the world’s largest mosaic. But that’s not the only reason it is Insta worthy – taking three years to complete, the colour, patterns and detail are like nothing you’ve seen before. We definitely recommend visiting this artwork during the day so you can see it in its fully-lit glory.
3. Hanoi Train Tracks
Great for capturing: Hanoi’s authenticity
Can you imagine train tracks running right through a packed out, city street? Well, why just imagine it when you can experience and take pictures of it right here in Hanoi? In the city centre, trains trundle along the narrow residential Ngo 224 Le Duan located nearby us in the Old Quarter. Here at 3:30pm and then again at 7:30pm, you will have the opportunity to get a great shot of local life as residents go about their everyday business while a train flies right past them. So visit a nearby cafe, get your camera setup and watch the authentic magic unfold. We can bet you won’t see anything like this anywhere else in the world…
4. Hoàn Kiếm Lake
Great for capturing: Hanoi’s beauty
Another stunner in the Old Quarter – Hoan Kiem Lake is loved by locals and travellers alike and when you get there, it’s easy to see why. With famous landmarks including Ngoc Son Temple, Turtle Tower and Huc Bridge, there are some amazing places to visit around the area (and not forgetting a tonne of photo opportunities to be taken too!). From dancers to artists, joggers to yoga lovers, this place is buzzing with activity at any time of the week and is the perfect people-watching spot as you take some time out from exploring the bustling city and line up your shot.
While it’s great at any time of day, we recommend heading for a walk around the lake at sunrise or sunset – your Instagram won’t regret it, we promise…
5. Quang Ba Flower Market
Great for capturing: Hanoi’s colour and culture
Hanoi is famous for its bustling markets – did you see our post about some of the best ones?. Whether you are looking for delicious nibbles, vibrant patterns or hand-crafted souvenirs, there will be a market perfect for you. If you’re looking to get a photogenic snap that is bursting with colour and texture, Quang Ba Flower Market is the spot for you. We recommend you get their early (and we mean early) as trading begins at 2am because this is when the market is at its busiest and brightest. If you’re looking for a truly authentic (and beaut) picture of Hanoi life, you should definitely make a visit here.
6. Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre
Great for capturing: Hanoi’s Entertainment
Up for a puppet show? It might have become popular around the world but there’s nothing like watching it right here in Hanoi. Dubbed as ‘one of the most impressive attractions in Hanoi travel and traditional art’, head to Hoàn Kiếm Lake and don’t miss this authentic form of entertainment as they bring ancient Vietnamese legends to life. Be sure to keep your camera handy and to capture the magic as the history of Hanoi unravels before your eyes.
